Steinem calls Palin "Wrong Woman" with the "Wrong Message"

Excellent L.A.Times op-ed piece today from Gloria Steinem about the Palin pick.  I couldn’t agree more, though the pie metaphor is a little odd.

Two things got me about the RNC speeches in the last two days. The first was the “drill, baby, drill” chant emanating from the audience. Here’s a thought for those who want to lessen our dependence on foreign oil: how about lessening our dependence on oil, period?

Because we are not going to be able, with all our reserves, to turn off the OPEC and the Canadian spigots for long, if at all, if we don’t find something to replace that constant flow. And building all these pipelines from Canada pretty much ensures we’ll be getting that needle in our vein for a long time to come.

The second thing, the thing that really rankles, is the rude “community organizer” comments. I just cannot even express my outrage with a stadium full of people who cheer for that kind of ignorant trash. Community organizing does indeed bear responsibilities, and what’s all the more honorable about those responsibilities is that they are most often voluntary, and they almost never carry a paycheck. They are about service and about caring for one’s neighbors. You know, good human values?

Now I know I’m moving a little slow on this (I had a comment the other day that my views were “stale” because someone else was a day ahead of me in saying smart women wouldn’t vote for a ticket that insults their intelligence).  But I read.  I think. I work.  Then I post.

And all I can say now is:

WTF Republicans!?!?  Are you going to put up with this crap?  Take your freakin’ party back from these whackjobs, for goodness sakes.

  1. one of Palin’s comments that irked me the most was her reference to special needs children needing a “special kind of love.” There was so transparently an insincerity in her tone . . .hell, her sarcastic tone throughout was insulting. When are those vying for the leadership going to stop resorting to pettiness playground insulting and respond to the people’s serious issues with careful, respectful, and intelligent thought?

Hell, after listening to McCain’s speech, I was left with the impression that only three words were continuously rearranged: God, America, and Fight. And the crowd went wild. But where was the substance worth cheering for?

  2. Then there was the part where she said as the mother of a special needs child she would make sure there was help available for the child and family. There is a lot of help available now. Depending on her families income and whatever strings she might have pulled, her son probably gets Supplemental Security Income. The schools now have special ed., there is something called early childhood development or something like that where somebody goes into the home and starts working with the special needs child when they aren’t much more than a baby. Then when the child is a toddler they start attending classes in a special room in a public school.

I know this sounds horrible, but I don’t have much faith an most things that politicans promise.

  3. I think the Libertarian party should host an invasion of the Republican party and then all the disaffected Libertarian types who don’t know they fall under Libertarian would start voting. That would be nearly all non-voting people of the Gen X crowd.

Either that or get real and rename it the “Pro-Death Unless In the Womb Party” Pee-Doo Party for short?? That sounds almost like P.Diddy, do you think I can sell it??
